If we still give attention to certain things it still has power over us. So it does not matter that a new year has come, if you still have the same way of thinking or behaving nothing about this year will be different. So I decided to write a note to myself so that whenever I am going through something this year I can read the lessons I learned last year and remind myself that I have come a long way and I have grown. Sometimes it is hard to see our progress when we are in the storm.
Maybe you can relate to some of these note to self moments, if you do then write them down and look at them every now and again. When you feel like you aren’t changing or going anywhere in life, REMEMBER THIS……..
NOTE TO SELF
1: Every time you were convinced you couldn’t go on, you did
There were so so many times last year that I was put in a situation or felt like I just couldn’t go on anymore. Trying to do things or act upon things in my own strength got really tiring. Until I hit rock bottom and God revealed to me through a song called ” You’re gonna be ok “ By Brain and Jenn Johnson. In that moment I knew that whatever it is that I am feeling I can rely on God to get me through. My flesh and feelings are too weak to carry me out of a dark place. Only God can do that if I let him. So this year when I have a challenge or a setback I can come back and read this and remember that I can go on even when I feel I can’t. Maybe you need that same reminding?
2: Stop talking and listen
So many times last year I wish I had a friend that I could just talk to. Someone who would listen to all my problems you know haha. Someone who had my best interests at heart. I was left feeling disappointed time after time until I got this revelation… Listening is more powerful than speaking. As soon as I realized that, God placed an angel of a friend in my life to be just what I needed but I think I needed to realize that it is better to want to be a better friend than the desire for a friend. So this year when those relationship challenges arise I want to remind myself to keep being a friend and listen. Stop being selfish and think about how I can be there for someone, instead of the other way around.
3: Do the world a favour and don’t hide your magic anymore
Last year I played it safe in some areas of my life because I was too afraid of failing, I was too afraid of people’s opinion, I was afraid of disappointing myself. Hiding won’t help anybody. This quote says it perfectly and whenever I want to shrink back I will read this and remember that the magic I have is from God and he wants me to spread light to others so that they too can shine and cause a ripple effect.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
4: Love yourself fiercely, that no-one dare love you half heartedly
When you realise your own worth, you will find friends who appreciate you for what you deserve. Do not settle for less because you are enough. Every time I feel down or alone this year I will choose to see myself the way God sees me. I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
5: Where you are is not who you are
Its easy to look at your current situation and think to yourself that you are not where you hoped you would be. Your current circumstances do not determine your future because your future is marked out by God, the one who made you and he loves you too much to just leave you where you are.
6: Stop being afraid of what could go wrong, focus on what could go right
start to look at things in a more positive light. Yes, it may be true that not everything will go smoothly in this year, but when that does happen rather focus on the good and figure out how you can make the bad work in your favour. Choose to see the things that go wrong as a lesson and not a setback.
7: your only limit is you.
2017 may have been a year of unaccomplished dreams or tasks but what I have learnt in this year is that we are our biggest barrier when it comes to doing something we have always wanted to do. Lets take my online store for example. I have been wanting to do this for a while now but I was always too afraid it would fail. At the end of 2017 I decided that 2018 would be the year I put to action all the things I have been hoping and dreaming about. Whether it fails or doesn’t work out is irrelevant, it’s the fact that I tried. You will never know unless you try!!!!
8: Don’t measure your progress using someone else ruler
Forget about comparing your journey to your neighbor it will never be the same. Comparison is the thief of joy and a lack of joy creates a void of hope and when you don’t have hope then that’s a dangerous place to be. Run your race the best you know how.
9: No one is you, that is your power
Find yourself in Jesus Christ. Once you become your true self, you become a force to be reckoned with. You can change the world just by being you. What you bring to the table is not what anyone else brings.
10: Starve your distractions and feed your focus
when we give attention to anything that is putting us down, making us feel bad, less than etc… It takes our attention away from what we should be focused on. Choose this year to feed your focus and not the need to feel loved or needed by gaining value through likes on social media. Figure out what it is that you need to focus on and then make time to do just that… FOCUS! Without focus distractions creep in slowly and that’s when we believe lies like, Im not good enough, I’ll never get there, Look what they have done…..
