What are your first thoughts when you hear the phrase ” Love Myself ” I find it to be such a controversial statement, in this day and age it can be taken in a negative light. In a world where selfies, superstars, entertainment and SELF confidence is at the forefront of our culture its hard to say that you love yourself because it could come across as conceited or self-centred and that’s the last thing we want people to think of us.
At the end of the day it comes down to us caring what people think. Why do we care so much about what others think of us? That is a tough question to ask because it might cause us to actually dig deep and find some issues that we do not want to face.
Sometimes you can be the ” most spiritual person ” but still struggle with loving yourself. Knowing that you are made in the image of God is one thing but actually making a decision to believe it is another. It is a daily decision that we have to make everyday that what the word of God says about me is true.
I hope that we all can learn to be confident in our own skin. What would happen if we all decided to love ourselves in a healthy way, not in a vein or conceited way but in a way that inspires others around us to love themselves.
How do you know when it is an unhealthy obsession with yourself?
When it becomes selfish.
When you would rather put your needs in front of others.
When you are in a conversation, all you can talk about is yourself or you find a way to make the conversation about you.
How do you know when you have a healthy view of yourself?
When you put others before yourself.
When your confidence inspires others to be more confident.
When you can receive a complement with grace but still be humble.
When you can look in the mirror, see your imperfections but be ok with the fact that you are not perfect.
How do you know when you need to love yourself more?
You like to please people, you do not want to upset them encase they think of you badly.
When you look in the mirror, all you see is your imperfections even if someone says you are pretty you do not believe it.
When you can not take a compliment because you think if you do then that is conceited. Or you genuinely do not believe that what that person is saying is true.
When you isolate yourself because you think others do not want to be around you.
Do you feel like you fit under any of these categories? I know that I do. I feel like sometimes we can take a bit of everything in that list and apply it to our lives somehow at sometime.
What can you take from all that has been said?
What I do know is that we can listen to what the world says or we can listen to what God says.
THE WORLD SAYS
The world’s view is temporary. It says fill your life up with things and possessions to make yourself feel good. Use Makeup and filters so that people think you are perfect. At the end of the day those things will not last and you will land up in a cycle of not liking yourself because the worlds standards are un realistic.
In Proverbs 23:7 – “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he”
In Psalm 139:14 “I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.”
In Deuteronomy 28:13 “The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.”
Our true identity comes from God and who we really are lies in what the bible says.
