Have you ever wanted something so badly that it’s all you could think about? When you wake up you are thinking about it, during the day you find your mind wonder to the possibilities of your dreams becoming reality. I most certainly have! I have always been a very purpose driven kind of girl. I was never interested in a 9-5 job that had nothing to do with where my calling was headed. Needless to say that set me up for a lot of disappointment growing up.
I grew up in a Christian house where going to church was a non-negotiable and worship music was the theme genre to my life. As I grew up and started developing a passion to sing and worship I would try to figure out how can I make this passion apart of my life. I always remember my mom and leaders as I was growing up say that in order to set your mind on something, you need to position yourself in the right places first. So for me if I wanted to be a worship leader. It would makes sense that I go to church, sing, surround myself with like minded people.
Naturally the next step would obviously be to get opportunities to sing on platform right? …… WRONG! Well that certainly was not the case for me. Sometime the waiting period of positioning yourself and getting opportunity to live your dream can take very long, in fact it could take most of your life. Let me share with you my experience on why I think this happens and why I think its actually for your benifit not to be so focused on the “opportunity”
1: We as humans want everything NOW! We don’t want to wait, let’s be real we get impatient when something is in the microwave for more than a minute. God knows this and I think he uses “time” to refine us, to grow us and shape us into what it is he wants for our lives. There is a saying that goes ” you can’t rush something that you want to last forever ”
The quicker you start something, it has the potential to end as quickly if you have not been patient in the process.
2: Our need for opportunity to arise becomes an idle in our lives, YES I said idle! It isn’t something that we would like to admit but sometimes we get into a huff and a puff if others are getting opportunities we feel we deserve. I am just being real here, have you ever put your heart and soul into something and then been discouraged when you don’t get the opportunities you feel you should have gotten by now eg: a job promotion, heading up a team in some kind of leadership capacity or in my case be a worship leader. What ever your thing is, if you feel you deserve opportunity I am sad to say but it has become an idle in your life.
This is something I had to come to grips with in my life because I started to place value on myself by the amount of opportunities I would get. Have you ever found yourself doing the same? If you have, don’t worry it is actually normal. You see as humans we want to be loved and valued but more than that we want people to show us that we are loved and valued. I have found that not feeling valuable ignites the feeling of wanting opportunity because if some how you get an opportunity it means that someone has seen the value you bring and you get that promotion you wanted or the salary increase you feel you have worked so hard for.
Over time I learnt that:
1: If I am constantly trying to prove my worth then I have already forgotten my value. Where does one’s worth come from? I believe that it comes from God and not from man. Your value begins by the fact that you are made in Gods very image “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). Even if your friends, family or loved ones don’t recognize your value God does and that is all that should matter.
2: Gods thoughts towards me are amazing and his plans for me are great.“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11).
He is for me and not against me. That means that I should not look to people for opportunity but instead trust God to put things in my path that allow me to grow and move forward in my life.
3:You belong to God, and as long as you cling to Him, no one can take that from you. His Word overwhelmingly confirms that you are His cherished treasure! Nothing can separate you from the love of God. If that thought can sink into your heart then it does not matter what opportunities you get in life, just the mere fact that you are alive is an opportunity to live our life to the fullest regardless of wether others recognize it or not.
